Protect Your Laptop or Notebook from
Theft - use a Cable Lock

Laptop and notebook computers are small, lightweight, and valuable - making them prime targets for theft. It only takes a few seconds for anyone to pickup your unattended laptop and walk off with it.

Thefts occur daily in dorm rooms, libraries, businesses, hospitals and
just about everywhere else that laptop computers are in use.

Protect your laptop or notebook from these crimes of opportunity by securing
them with a laptop cable lock.

When should I use a laptop cable lock?

Whenever you plan to leave your laptop unattended,
even for 15 seconds!

That's more than enough time for a thief to unplug cables
and walk away with your laptop.

The solution is simple - buy a laptop lock and use it faithfully!

Laptop cable lock systems are portable, usually priced from $25~$50 and are available from a
number of sources. What should you look for in a laptop cable lock system?

Cable should be high quality steel with a protective coating to
prevent marring or scratching of surfaces

Lock system should be easy to use and transport with
your laptop or notebook

After-sale support for quick and easy replacement of lost keys

Lock system should be expandable to allow the user to lock other accessories
(e.g., LCD monitors, external drives) along with the laptop.

Laptop Cable Locks typically use the laptop's Universal Security Slot (USS) to secure a cable
to the laptop. The cable is wrapped around a post, table, or some other stationary object that
cannot easily be moved, and locked in place.

If a suitable anchor point is not available, anchor pads are available that may be
fastened with screws or high-strength adhesive to accept the cable lock systems.

If your laptop, notebook, or other electronic equipment is not equipped with a USS,
these same anchor pads may be attached to your laptop with adhesive
to provide an anchor point on your equipment.

For those who believe that adhesives are not strong enough, consider that a
large percentage of your car is held together with adhesives - they have
come a long way in recent years!

Remember, any security system can be defeated if the perpetrator has
enough time and the right tools, so in addition to hardware security
we should all exercise common sense and avoid leaving your
valuable equipment in unattended/unsecured areas!
